At a glance
- Cosmetics, food supplements and medicines have different purposes and rules.
- Novel foods require the relevant authorization and compliance with its conditions.
- A label or laboratory report alone does not demonstrate a medical benefit.
Identify the category first
CBD means cannabidiol, a different substance from THC. However, hemp product is a broad label covering very different mixtures. Before using a product, establish whether it is a cosmetic, food or medicine and what purpose its responsible manufacturer states.
Cosmetics are principally intended for external parts of the body; an ingredient list does not establish suitability for swallowing. Hemp seed oil does not mean the same thing as a specified CBD content. Do not infer the whole composition from a leaf illustration or product name.
Useful details to check
For foods, check the product name, ingredients and allergens, responsible business, durability date and storage conditions. Cosmetics have their own labelling requirements, including the responsible person, ingredients, batch and precautions.
Read a laboratory analysis as information about a particular sample. Compare the product and batch identification with the packaging. A content test alone does not answer questions about legal classification or effectiveness as treatment. If you cannot identify the product or its intended purpose, do not invent a way of using it.

Novel-food status is not authorization
SZPI explains that novel foods can enter the market only after authorization and under the conditions of the Union list. The European Commission’s orientation catalogue is not itself an authorization. Online availability does not replace that process.
EFSA published a limited provisional CBD assessment in February 2026, identifying continuing data gaps. Safety could not be established for people under 25, pregnant or breastfeeding people, or those taking medicines. We do not translate that finding into personal dosage advice.

When a product promises treatment
SÚKL distinguishes medicinal products from food supplements. A supplement does not become a medicine because an influencer recommends it or a pharmacy sells it. If you are considering a product for a health problem, discuss it with a healthcare professional along with your other preparations.
Keep the packaging and product details if you suspect an adverse reaction. For a sudden serious deterioration in health, call 155 in Czechia; the Toxicological Information Centre also advises on suspected poisoning. Find the contacts in the help guide.
